"WEEKEND ROUNDUP Doesn’t play well with others In which the Prime Minister is admonished to loosen the heck up. The Sun Media editorialists were not amused by Stephen Harper’s performance during the first week of the campaign, particularly his treatment of the media — which seems to be softening, based on Monday morning’s press conference — and his refusal to take more than a few questions at any given appearance. “You came across looking like an arrogant micro-manager with the warmth of a robot and with absolutely no regard whatsoever for the media, either personally or professionally,” they write. “Ditch the long face and the contempt for the media, and remember that not all voters are policy wonks who appreciate political nuance. Many simply vote with their eyes and their gut.” In large part because of this behaviour, Mr. Harper “has risked turning the election into a debate on his character,” Chantal Hébert argues in the Toronto Star — “a huge gamble for a figure that has been shown to have a higher-than-average potential to polarize Canadians.” That gamble, says Hébert, is predicated on the idea that Canadians are simply sick of minority parliaments and will vote for a majority even if they’re not entirely comfortable with its leader. And perhaps that is the gamble. We’ve just never really understood it. Do people really vote that way? How does the thought process go? “Good gravy, I hate this candidate. But I’m sick of minority parliaments. So I’m going to vote for the candidate I hate on the assumption that millions of other Canadians whose voting intentions I’m unaware of will cast ballots in such a way that it all winds up in a majority.” That’s a gamble. Remember when pundits used to argue that since Stephen Harper is a strategic genius, anything he might appear to have done wrong was simply a matter of failing to comprehend the scope of that genius? You don’t see it much anymore. A rare and extraordinary exception would be David Frum arguing in the National Post that Mr. Harper successfully goaded Michael Ignatieff into accepting his challenge for a one-on-one debate in order to enflame tensions between the Liberals and the other opposition parties — i.e., because they wouldn’t be included in the debate — and basically to coax the Liberal leader into a very un-prime ministerial freakout. As John Moore points out, also in the Post, this makes very little sense at all. Mr. Ignatieff didn’t freak out; he does not behave as though Mr. Harper is (as Frum puts it) “history’s greatest monster”; and there’s nothing in Frum’s analysis to explain why Mr. Harper wouldn’t follow through on the challenge, or why his office has been tortuously attempting to argue he never challenged Mr. Ignatieff in the first place. “It would seem in spite of Harper’s seven-year record of ill-timed political missteps there remains a stubborn cohort convinced he is a political Kasparov,” says Moore. Indeed. A small, lonely cohort. And now … issues! The Post‘s John Ivison describes the Liberals’ platform, unveiled on Sunday, as “long … on spending” and “short on investment.” Good ideas, in his view, include a half-billion-dollar investment in aboriginal education, “improving Internet access in rural areas,” and democratic reform proposals including a “People’s Question Period” and online voting. Bad ideas include “the usual Liberal attempts at social engineering that rarely work.” But the real hole in the plan, as Ivison says, is the idea that it can all be paid for by freezing (or raising, depending on who you talk to) corporate taxes. Economists are practically lining up to explain that this math simply doesn’t work. Queen’s University law professor Kathleen Lahey, writing in the Ottawa Citizen, argues against the Conservatives’ income-splitting proposal on grounds it’s just a circuitous route to a social conservative fantasy: Wealthy women stay home instead of joining the workforce, while poorer, browner, gayer and less procreative people can go fly kites. We have no real opinion on this. But we certainly agree that “it would be a mistake to see Harper’s latest offer of income splitting as an off-the-cuff or hasty act of desperation.” Damn thing doesn’t kick in for four years, at the earliest! Rex Murphy, writing in the Post, says Mr. Harper’s pledge of a loan guarantee for the Lower Churchill hydroelectric project “is a sign that the longest, most bitter, contention in Newfoundland public life may, finally, be over.” And Gilles Duceppe’s rage at the idea, despite Quebec enjoying a “sweetheart” deal on energy prices from the Upper Churchill at Newfoundland’s expense, is yet another sign, says Murphy, that Bloc Québécois MPs are not “parliamentarians like any other.” Rather “they displace the natural balance of the federation.” Maybe. But this isn’t just a separatist thing; it’s a Quebec thing. Jean Charest opposes the the deal in no uncertain terms as well. The Globe and Mail‘s editorialists, for the record, think the loan guarantee is perfectly appropriate in furtherance of “a fine national project,” and suggest that if “Hydro-Québec and its sole shareholder, the government of Quebec, had chosen to be more co-operative with Newfoundland and Labrador,” they might not be so outraged now. The Edmonton Journal‘s editorialists are dispirited by yet more calls for “national dialogue” on health care, even “after decades of reviews, reports and premier’s advisory panels on the subject.” The problem, clearly, is taking those discussions to the next step, i.e., the implementation of (relatively) radical ideas. “Until we are ready to tolerate a bit of pain on either taxes or changes to service when reforms start to be implemented,” they conclude, “it’s hard to blame politicians for being reluctant to make the ‘tough decisions’ people seem to favour only in the abstract.” The Globe‘s Adam Radwanski thinks Mr. Ignatieff needs to pay health care more mind than his platform suggests he’s planning to. “As a general rule in this country, if Liberals can’t outflank their more conservative opponents on health care, they can’t win elections,” he writes. “And considering that Mr. Harper easily bests Mr. Ignatieff on jobs and the economy, the Liberal Leader really needs to make the other pressing concern work for him.” New rule: Any columnist who takes seriously the idea that the 2008 coalition agreement between the Liberals and New Democrats is still in legal effect should not, himself, be taken seriously. Robert Sibley, for example, who writes portentously of Mr. Ignatieff’s plans for separatist/socialist collaboration in the Citizen. His column is also notable for blaming the opposition parties for “manufactur[ing] a phoney ‘scandal’ — contempt of Parliament — to bring down the government,” and also blaming the government for “engineer[ing] this election.” We’re not totally sure what Sun Media readers are going to make of John Robson, but here he is, and in his inaugural column he attempts to explain what he’s all about — which is a sort of anachronistic, principled conservatism. Modern politicians, he says, “don’t want us to remember that, while politicians back [in the time of Laurier and St. Laurent] also knew about dirty tricks and misleading campaign slogans, they spoke comprehensible sentences, started answers with ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ instead of ‘Well,’ argued from first principles and praised liberty. And they could again if we made them.” National Post

Hamberge Dantuono: pic Hello. I am in town for a few weeks and am looking a cool guy to hang out with while I am here. If you are white with an average to fit build and want to hang out with a cool chick. Please send me your pic and lets talk. I will be in town starting tomorrow. Please also be a non smoker. I will be staying in a hotel but want to get out and see some of the city. I am not looking for a one night stand of fuck just a three week short term casual fun time. Please include a pic or I won't respond. Thank you. Join chirrup.com to connect with friends, share photos and create your own profile.
